📜 Key facts

AgeVaries by deposit
Origin & sourcesMexico (Chihuahua), Brazil and China.
CompositionClear calcite rhombs (cleavage pieces) whose internal cleavage cracks split light into rainbows. 'Rainbow calcite' is also a trade name for banded multi-coloured calcite (CaCO₃, Mohs 3).

How it forms

Calcite crystallizes from carbonate-rich water in veins, caves and cavities, or forms masses in sediment. Trace elements and inclusions give its many colours. It is soft, fizzes in dilute acid and dissolves slowly in water, so keep it dry.
