📜 Key facts

AgeVaries by deposit
Origin & sourcesVarious localities, often sold from Mexico and Peru.
CompositionCalcite darkened by inclusions such as carbon, manganese oxides or organic matter (CaCO₃, Mohs 3).

How it forms

Calcite crystallizes from carbonate-rich water in veins, caves and cavities, or forms masses in sediment. Trace elements and inclusions give its many colours. It is soft, fizzes in dilute acid and dissolves slowly in water, so keep it dry.
