📜 Key facts

AgeVaries by deposit
Origin & sourcesMexico (Chihuahua) is the main commercial source.
CompositionMassive or banded orange calcite, coloured by traces of iron (CaCO₃, Mohs 3).

How it forms

Calcite crystallizes from carbonate-rich water in veins, caves and cavities, or forms masses in sediment. Trace elements and inclusions give its many colours. It is soft, fizzes in dilute acid and dissolves slowly in water, so keep it dry.
