CompositionCalcite crystals with pointed scalenohedral (dogtooth) shapes (CaCO₃, Mohs 3).

How it forms

Calcite crystallizes from carbonate-rich water in veins, caves and cavities, or forms masses in sediment. Trace elements and inclusions give its many colours. It is soft, fizzes in dilute acid and dissolves slowly in water, so keep it dry.
