Age	Early Cretaceous, about 100–110 million years ago
Origin & sources	Australia: Lightning Ridge (NSW), Coober Pedy and Andamooka (South Australia).
Composition	Precious or common opal (hydrated silica) replacing shell, bone or wood

How it forms

In the inland sea that once covered central Australia, silica-rich groundwater filled the voids left by dissolving shells, bones and wood and set as opal. Opalized dinosaur bone and belemnites are prized.
