💡 Good to know
Herkimer 'diamonds' are not diamonds. They are naturally double-terminated, very clear quartz crystals from pockets in Cambrian dolostone (about 500 million years old) around Herkimer County, New York. Several fee-dig mines let visitors collect. Some contain black bitumen or fluorescent petroleum inclusions.
