📜 Key facts
| Age | Pegmatite rose quartz, typically hundreds of millions of years old |
|---|---|
| Origin & sources | Madagascar, Brazil, Sri Lanka and India. |
| Composition | Quartz (SiO₂) with microscopic oriented fibres (a dumortierite-like mineral) that also give the pink colour |
How it forms
Very fine fibres line up along three directions in the quartz. Cut as a sphere or cabochon, the stone shows a six-rayed star, often best seen when a point of light shines through it from behind (diasterism).
