📜 Key facts
| Age | The quartz veins formed about 250–300 million years ago, during the building of the Ouachita Mountains |
|---|---|
| Origin & sources | Ouachita Mountains of west-central Arkansas, especially around Mount Ida (Montgomery County) and Hot Springs (Garland County). Quartz has been Arkansas's state mineral since 1967. |
| Composition | Quartz (SiO₂), often water-clear, sometimes with chlorite or 'blue phantom' inclusions |
How it forms
As the Ouachita Mountains were folded and faulted, hot silica-rich fluids filled fractures in sandstone and shale. Large, clear crystals grew slowly in the open pockets.
