📜 Key facts

AgeSearles Lake evaporites are geologically young (Pleistocene to present)
Origin & sourcesSearles Lake (a dry lake bed), Trona, San Bernardino County, California, USA.
CompositionHalite (NaCl). The pink colour comes from salt-loving (halophilic) microbes, mainly archaea, trapped in the crystals. Halite (NaCl) is rock salt. It dissolves in water and draws moisture from humid air, so never wash it or make elixirs with it. Store it dry, ideally sealed.

How it forms

Brine in the lake evaporated in the desert heat, growing cubic and 'hopper' salt crystals. Pink-pigmented archaea living in the brine were trapped inside, giving the colour, which can fade in strong light.
