📜 Key facts

AgePermian evaporites, about 270–250 million years old
Origin & sourcesPotash mines near Carlsbad, New Mexico (USA), and Germany (Stassfurt). It is often found with sylvite.
CompositionHalite whose blue to violet colour comes from defects in the crystal structure (colour centres) caused by natural radiation, often from nearby potassium-40 in sylvite. Halite (NaCl) is rock salt. It dissolves in water and draws moisture from humid air, so never wash it or make elixirs with it. Store it dry, ideally sealed.

How it forms

Ancient seas evaporated to leave thick salt beds. Over millions of years, weak natural radioactivity from potassium in nearby sylvite (KCl) created colour centres that turned some halite blue.
