Origin & sourcesTampa Bay and the Hillsborough, Withlacoochee and Suwannee rivers of Florida and southern Georgia. It is Florida's state stone (adopted 1979).
CompositionChalcedony (microcrystalline quartz, SiO₂) replacing coral, often with drusy quartz-lined pockets

How it forms

Colonial corals grew in warm, shallow seas over Florida. Silica-rich groundwater later dissolved the calcium carbonate skeletons and replaced them with chalcedony, preserving the coral pattern and sometimes leaving hollow, geode-like centres.
