|---|---|
| Origin & sources | Northern Lower Michigan, especially the Petoskey, Charlevoix and Traverse City beaches of Lake Michigan. It is Michigan's state stone. |
| Composition | Calcite-replaced colonial coral (Hexagonaria percarinata) |
How it forms
Colonies of Hexagonaria coral grew in a warm, shallow Devonian sea covering Michigan. Glaciers later plucked fossil-bearing rock and scattered it along the Great Lakes shores. The hexagonal pattern shows best when wet or polished.
