🦴 Fossil facts
| Age | Arizona's Petrified Forest material is about 225 million years old (Late Triassic). Other deposits range widely. |
|---|---|
| Origin & sources | Arizona (Petrified Forest), Madagascar, Indonesia, Oregon, Washington (Ginkgo), Egypt, Argentina. |
| Composition | Mostly quartz and chalcedony (sometimes opal) replacing wood, colored by iron and manganese oxides |
How it forms
Fallen trees were buried by volcanic ash or sediment. Silica-rich groundwater soaked through and replaced the wood cell by cell, keeping growth rings and bark texture in stone.
