📜 Key facts

AgeTertiary volcanic rock (age varies)
Origin & sourcesMexico (mainly Chihuahua and nearby states); also sold from other sources.
CompositionAn orbicular rhyolite (volcanic rock), often silicified. It is sold as 'jasper' but is not a true jasper. Tan, cream and pink groundmass with dark brown to black ring- and blob-shaped spots

How it forms

The spots are spherulites and orbicules: round clusters of radiating feldspar and quartz crystals that grew as the volcanic glass cooled and devitrified. Iron and manganese oxides later outlined them in darker colours, giving the leopard-spot look.
