Origin & sourcesEroded out of the Black Hills and collected on the plains to the east, around Fairburn, South Dakota, and into Nebraska. It became South Dakota's state gemstone in 1966.
CompositionChalcedony in tightly folded red, orange, yellow, black and white fortification bands

How it forms

The agates formed as nodules in the sedimentary Minnelusa Formation. As the Black Hills eroded, the tough nodules weathered out and were scattered across the surrounding grasslands.
