✺ Glows under UV
| Longwave UV (~365 nm) | Strong red |
|---|---|
| Shortwave UV (~254 nm) | Red, usually weaker |
Chromium makes ruby fluoresce red (about 694 nm), even in daylight, which adds to its glow. Iron-rich rubies fluoresce much less.
Reactions vary by locality and specimen; many specimens of a fluorescent species do not glow. Shortwave UV can burn skin and damage eyes. Wear UV-blocking glasses, and never look into any UV lamp. Sources: Wikipedia: Ruby. More UV-reactive stones →
