📜 Key facts

AgePliocene to Pleistocene, roughly 3 million to tens of thousands of years old (Florida); varies elsewhere
Origin & sourcesFlorida, USA (the Fort Drum / Rucks Pit area, famous for crystal-lined fossil clams), plus material sold from Indonesia and elsewhere.
CompositionFossil bivalve shells (clams such as Mercenaria) whose hollow insides are lined with sparkling druzy calcite or quartz. Some are partly replaced by silica

How it forms

After a clam died, its two shells stayed closed and the inside stayed hollow. Mineral-rich groundwater seeped in and grew a lining of tiny crystals over thousands of years. Florida specimens are mostly calcite (they fizz in acid), and silica-replaced ones are quartz.
