Also known as: Dominican blue amber
Variety of Amber.
📜 Key facts
| Age | Miocene, about 20–15 million years old |
|---|---|
| Origin & sources | Dominican Republic (Cordillera Septentrional, near Santiago). Smaller amounts come from Mexico (Chiapas) and Indonesia. |
| Composition | Fossil tree resin (from the extinct tree Hymenaea protera) containing fluorescent aromatic hydrocarbons |
How it forms
Resin from ancient trees was buried and hardened over millions of years. In daylight it looks yellow-brown, but it shows a blue surface glow in sunlight and glows strongly blue under UV light, probably from aromatic compounds.
Mineral data: see Amber.
✺ Glows under UV
| Longwave UV (~365 nm) | Strong blue |
|---|

Dominican blue amber shows a blue sheen even in sunlight and glows intensely blue under longwave UV.
Reactions vary by locality and specimen; many specimens of a fluorescent species do not glow. Shortwave UV can burn skin and damage eyes. Wear UV-blocking glasses, and never look into any UV lamp. Sources: Wikipedia: Dominican amber. More UV-reactive stones →
