🦴 Fossil facts
| Age | Baltic amber about 44 million years; Dominican about 16–20 million; Burmese about 99 million (Cretaceous) |
|---|---|
| Origin & sources | Baltic coast (Poland, Lithuania, Kaliningrad), Dominican Republic, Myanmar, Mexico (Chiapas). |
| Composition | Fossilized tree resin (organic polymers); inclusions of insects, spiders, plants and air bubbles |
How it forms
Sticky resin oozed from ancient trees and trapped small creatures. Buried for millions of years, the resin polymerized and hardened into amber, keeping the inclusions in fine detail. Many 'insect amber' items for sale are copal or fakes.
