📜 Key facts
| Age | Permian, about 250 million years old (Garber Sandstone) |
|---|---|
| Origin & sources | Central Oklahoma, especially around Norman in Cleveland County. The barite rose has been Oklahoma's state rock since 1968. |
| Composition | Rosette-shaped barite (BaSO₄) crystals with grains of red-brown iron-stained sand trapped inside |
How it forms
Barite grew as thin, petal-like crystal blades within porous sandstone, trapping sand grains as it grew. Weathering frees the 'roses'. It is a separate desert-rose form from the gypsum or selenite roses of the Sahara.
