🦴 Fossil facts
| Age | Late Cretaceous, about 71–75 million years ago |
|---|---|
| Origin & sources | Bearpaw Formation, southern Alberta, Canada (St. Mary River), plus small amounts in Montana. |
| Composition | Aragonite (the ammonite's nacre); thin layers create the play of color |
How it forms
Shells of Placenticeras ammonites kept their original aragonite nacre under special burial conditions. Light interfering in the stacked layers produces brilliant reds and greens. It is one of the few biogenic gemstones.
