📜 Key facts
| Age | Sapphire crystals are often hundreds of millions of years old, depending on the deposit |
|---|---|
| Origin & sources | Sri Lanka (Ratnapura), Myanmar (Mogok), India, Thailand and Montana. The 563-carat 'Star of India' is in the American Museum of Natural History. |
| Composition | Corundum (Al₂O₃) with oriented needles of rutile (TiO₂) |
How it forms
Titanium dissolved in the corundum separates out as it cools, forming tiny rutile needles in three directions within the crystal. A smooth cabochon reflects light from the needles as a six-rayed star.
