📜 Key facts

AgePrecambrian metamorphic rocks, roughly 1 billion years old or more
Origin & sourcesOdisha (Orissa), India, the main commercial source.
CompositionIolite (gem cordierite, Mg₂Al₄Si₅O₁₈) with glittering hematite and/or goethite inclusions and patches of orange sunstone (feldspar)

How it forms

Iolite and feldspar grew together in high-grade metamorphic rocks. Thin, plate-like iron-oxide inclusions catch the light as a coppery glitter (aventurescence), the same effect that makes sunstone sparkle.
