📜 Key facts

AgeLate Cenozoic volcanic rocks, a few million years old
Origin & sourcesManakarra (Mamuju), West Sulawesi, Indonesia, where it came on the market in the late 2010s.
CompositionBotryoidal (grape-like) chalcedony, usually purple. It is NOT true agate: it has no banding, and it is sometimes described as 'botryoidal purple chalcedony'

How it forms

Silica-rich fluids in cavities of altered volcanic rock deposited chalcedony as tiny spheres that grew into grape-like clusters. Traces of iron and manganese, or fine inclusions, may give the purple colour. Some pieces have a sparkly quartz coating.
