🪨 Geode facts

AgeVaries widely. Many collector geodes are Mississippian (about 340 million years) or Cretaceous to Tertiary volcanic (about 130–25 million years).
Origin & sourcesWorldwide: USA (Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Utah, Oregon), Mexico, Morocco, Brazil, Uruguay, Madagascar, Namibia.
CompositionA shell of chalcedony or limestone lined with quartz, amethyst, calcite, celestite and other crystals

How it forms

Geodes start as hollow spaces: gas bubbles in lava, or cavities and dissolved nodules in sedimentary rock. Mineral-rich groundwater seeps in over thousands to millions of years, first lining the wall with chalcedony, then growing crystals inward. A geode has a hollow center; a nodule is completely filled.
