📜 Key facts

AgeModern (recent shells)
Origin & sourcesRivers of the eastern and central USA, including Arkansas (the White, Black and Cache rivers). Arkansas once had a large freshwater pearl and button-shell industry.
CompositionShell of freshwater mussels (family Unionidae): calcium carbonate (aragonite) with a pearly nacre (mother-of-pearl) lining

How it forms

Mussels build their shells from aragonite. Thin, stacked aragonite platelets in the inner layer form iridescent nacre. Many North American freshwater mussels are threatened or endangered and are protected. Don't take live mussels, and collect only empty shells where local rules allow it.
