How it forms

Topaz crystallises in granite pegmatites and rhyolite cavities from fluorine-rich fluids. Natural blue topaz is usually pale. Almost all the vivid 'Sky', 'Swiss' and 'London' blue on the market comes from colourless topaz that has been irradiated and then heated. The colour is stable, and stones are released only after any induced radioactivity has decayed. December birthstone (modern US list).
