📜 Key facts

AgeArkansas bauxite formed about 55 million years ago (Paleocene–Eocene)
Origin & sourcesSaline and Pulaski Counties, Arkansas (the town of Bauxite), plus Australia, Guinea, Brazil and Jamaica. Bauxite has been Arkansas's state rock since 1967.
CompositionA mix of aluminum hydroxide minerals (gibbsite, boehmite, diaspore) with clay and iron oxides

How it forms

Tropical weathering leached silica out of aluminum-rich rock. In Arkansas this was nepheline syenite. The aluminum-rich residue left behind is bauxite, often with pea-like 'pisolites'.
