🪨 Geode facts
| Age | Often Cretaceous to Tertiary volcanic rocks (about 130–25 million years) |
|---|---|
| Origin & sources | Brazil, Uruguay, Mexico (Chihuahua), Morocco, Botswana, USA (Oregon, Montana). |
| Composition | Concentric bands of chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz), sometimes with a quartz center |
How it forms
Silica-rich solutions repeatedly filled a cavity, laying down layer after layer of chalcedony. Fully filled ones are agate nodules; those with a hollow center are geodes.
Mineral data: see Agate.
